The report provides projected demographic data about the Palestinian population of the West Bank and Gaza Strip for the period between 1987 and 2012. Some comparisons with Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics' figures are also presented.
The base population used for projections is the 1987 West Bank Database Project (WBDP) estimate, which is, in turn, based on the 1967 Israeli census. Seven different scenarios based on various assumptions regarding future patterns of total fertility rate and net migration balance are used. By the year 2012, the West Bank population is expected to range between 2,376,000 and 3,526,000 (according to the different scenarios). The Gaza Strip population is expected to range between 1,318,000 and 2,147,000. The average annual growth rate for the period between 1987-2012 is expected to range between 2.7% and 4.6% for the West Bank and between 2.9% and 4.9% for the Gaza Strip.
The projection of choice suggested by the authors is based on a zero net migration balance and a moderate fertility decline during the projection period. Using this scenario, the estimated 2012 West Bank population would be 2,805,000 and that of the Gaza Strip, 1,628,000 persons. A decline in the 0-14 year age group and an increase in the 15-years and above age group is expected by the year 2012.
