29. Central Bureau of Statistics. Demographic Characteristics of the Arab Population in Judea & Samaria, 1968-1993. Jerusalem: State of Israel, 1996: 201 pp. In English and Hebrew.

This report presents the Israeli estimates of some demographic characteristics of the Palestinians in Judea & Samaria and the Gaza Area, including estimates of population size, birth, fertility, mortality and migration rates. The Judea & Samaria population (excluding East Jerusalem) for 1993 was estimated to be approximately 1,084,400 persons and that of the Gaza Area was estimated to be 748,400 persons. The annual average population growth rate for the years 1990-1992 was estimated to be 4.7% in Judea & Samaria and 5.5% in the Gaza Area. The report attributes these high growth rates to the high fertility rates (estimated at 6.27 for Judea & Samaria and 7.84 for Gaza Area during the same period) and the positive migration balance following the Gulf War. Infant mortality was estimated to lie between 38 and 44 per 1,000 births for both Judea & Samaria and the Gaza Area. More detailed calculations are presented regarding infant mortality in the Gaza Area. The rate of reported infant mortality was 24.4/1,000, while other estimates, based on comparison with infant mortality patterns among the Arabs in Israel during 1977-1980, range from 32 to 42 per 1,000 live births
