54. Rigby, A. Coping With the "Epidemic of Violence": The Struggle Over Health Care in the Intifada. Journal of Palestine Studies XX 1991; 4: 86-98.

This article describes how Palestinians in the Occupied Territories attempted to cope with the different health problems incurred by the Intifada. Some background information about the status of the Palestinian health care system and health conditions in general before the Intifada is provided. Attempts by Palestinian grassroots health organizations to cope with the new emergency situation caused by the Intifada are described. One of the main achievements as indicated by the author is that Palestinians managed, to some degree, to reverse a pre-Intifada situation of dependence on Israeli health care services and facilities. As a result an independent Palestinian health care infrastructure began to emerge.
