52. Astal Z. Epidemiological survey of the prevalence of parasites amongchildren in Khan Younis governorate, Palestine. Parasitol Res 2004; 94: 449–451.
This is a study to determine the prevalence of parasitic infections in children, ages between 6-11 yrs old, in khan Younis, Gaza Strip. Stool samples from 1,370 children were collected after earning approval from their parents. Samples were analyzed using direct smear microscopy, flotation technique (cyst detection), and sedimentation technique (egg detection). The results indicated that 468 (34.2%) of the population were infected with different parasitic species. Infections among boys (36.4%) were higher than girls (31.4%). Children between ages 8-9 are the most affected with parasitic infections. Boys are more susceptible to infection due to their more active lifestyle in Khan Younis Society. Children between ages 8-9 are more likely to be infected maybe due to the fact that they learn less about hygienic procedures in schools than older children.
