This article provides an historical overview of the poliomyelitis outbreaks and changes in poliomyelitis control policies in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza Strip. A separate discussion of poliomyelitis control in the West Bank and Gaza Strip from the viewpoint of the Israeli administration is presented. The authors advocate the use of a combined poliomyelitis immunization program, including both oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) and inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV). It is argued that this combination was effective in preventing the occurrence of the disease in the West Bank and Gaza despite the presence of wild poliovirus in sewage and the fresh importation of wild poliovirus from neighboring areas.
