The authors conducted a survey on 88 patients who were admitted to Makassed hospital for acute stroke. CT scanning was performed for 93% of the patients. Twenty-four percent of the scanned patients showed evidence of hemorrhagic stroke. Of those, 18% were intracerebral. The report states that 34% of the patients with acute stroke had a history of diabetes mellitus. In addition, 19 patients had a family history of diabetes mellitus. The authors conclude that there is need for a community-based screening program for diabetes mellitus.
