61. Shalhoub-Kevorkian. N. Imposition of virginity testing: a life-saver or a license to kill? Social Science & Medicine 60 (2005) 1187–1196.
This is a study to understand the impact of Imposed Virginity Testing (IVT) on its takers in the Palestinian Society. Interviews with seven women under 21 who underwent IVT, seventeen police officers who took such cases, two physicians who administer IVT, seven prosecutors, and focus groups consisting of four lawyers and four social workers were conducted. Questions were administered to understand respondent experiences, information about IVT such as legality, reliability, etc… and the consequences of such procedure. The authors conclude that IVT contributes to the victim degradation and social oppression. In addition, medical practices and law are being used as a tool to impose oppression on its victims in such cases.
