6. Kaileh, M. Report of a Study In the West Bank On Anemia among Palestine Refugee Children. Jerusalem: UNRWA, 2002: 22pp.
This study was conducted to assess the effect of the ongoing crisis in the Occupied Palestinian Territory on the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia among children 0-2 years of age and other related factors such as age at registration, and the use of prophylactic iron. The study showed that the overall prevalence of anemia (defined as a hemoglobin concentration less than 11 grams/dl) was 29.7% in the year 2000 and 39% in the year 2001. The majority of anemic children suffered from mild anemia. Stratifying the prevalence of anemia among children by health center revealed that there was a drastic increase in the prevalence of anemia among children living inside refugee camps or remote areas.
