3. Al-Kernawi,A., Graham,J., and Izzeldin,A. The Psychological Impact of Polygamous Marriages on Palestinian Women. Women and Health 2001; 34, 1: 1-16.
This article compares a variety of socio-demographic characteristics in relation to women’s experiences of, and appreciation of, polygamy. Those factors, which have been found to have important potential bearing on polygamy include economic status, housing conditions, employment, marital relationship satisfaction, mental health symptomatology, and self esteem. Data are derived from a convenience snowball sampling of 187 Palestinian senior (first to be married) and junior (most recently married) wives in a polygamous marriage who were living in one of three refugee camps in the Gaza Strip. The present article is one of the first to consider polygamy in refugee camps, and analysis of data necessarily examines the phenomenon in this specific context.
