20. Central Regional Committee for Rehabilitation. A Study of 23 Palestinian Villages in the Central District of the West Bank with Special Reference to the Needs of Persons with Disabilities. CRCR, 1995: 79 pp.

This house-to-house survey signaled the initiation of the third regional model for community-based rehabilitation (CBR) in Palestine. The study describes how the area surveyed, while close to the Ramallah urban area, generally suffers from under-development and deprivation. The survey questionnaire elicited basic socio-economic indicators of the general population and the specific issues faced by the disabled population. As in the rest of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, disabled males outnumber disabled females, indicating a pattern of discrimination against females, which leads to their premature death. A large proportion of disabled people is older, the mean age of a disabled person being 35.9 years. Only 4% of those surveyed denoted their disability as being mild. Overall, the study confirms the need for immediate assistance, focusing not only on physical problems and their solutions, but also on psycho-social problems. The report lists four priorities for the development of CBR programs.
