22. Dawson, L. and Reid, I. The Cultural Context and Constraints of the Development of a Physiotherapy Degree Course in Palestine. Undated, 123 pages.
This document examines the cultural context within which the physiotherapy course was introduced at Bethlehem University in Palestine. It presents a discussion of the effect of Islamic religion, social norms and the political situation on Palestinian education. This is followed by an historical look at innovations in higher education in the Arab world and Palestine in particular. A number of issues related to teaching and practicing physiotherapy are discussed. Some experiences in the region are presented. An interesting comparison between Palestine and Ireland is presented in terms of history, politics, socio-economic conditions, demography, health care and physiotherapy practice. The authors conclude the need for an in-depth survey of customs, conditions and expectations from the physiotherapy course, in order to ensure harmony between curricula and context.
