24. Gaza National Committee for Rehabilitation, Diakonia. Disability and Rehabilitation Needs in the Gaza Strip: A Survey Report on Bureij and Al-Shati Refugee Camps. GNCR, 1993: 66 pp.
In Arabic and English. The main goal of the survey is to set the ground for establishing a community based rehabilitation program in the two communities and then to spread into other communities in the Gaza Strip. In order to collect the basic information about the status o f the two communities and the needs for rehabilitation of the disabled residents, 792 disabled persons were interviewed in Al-Brayj refugee camp and 1195 in Ashati` refugee camp (4% of the total population). Some of the main findings are:
-35% of the disabled persons in Al-Brayj and 45% in Ashati` refugee camp came from poor families
-The percentage of males was higher than females among the disabled population in both communities (58% males in Al-Brayj and 55% in A-Shati`)
-35% of the disabled in both communities were under 15 years of age.
-A significant correlation existed between mental disability and poverty.
- In terms of social integration, males had a clear advantage over females indicating that this difference should be taken into consideration in planning for rehabilitation programs. In addition, physically disabled persons had an advantage over the mentally disabled.
-The survey results indicate that the elderly are also a group which requires particular attention in future planning.
